Low Porosity Hair Explained: What the Label Can and Cannot Tell You

A practical look at porosity claims, unreliable float tests and choosing products according to how your hair behaves.

What porosity means

Porosity describes aspects of how a hair fibre takes up and releases water under particular conditions. It is influenced by the fibre's outer structure, chemical history and damage. A social-media label such as low porosity cannot capture every factor that affects your wash day.

Why the water float test is unreliable

Dropping a loose strand into a glass of water is a popular demonstration, but floating or sinking is influenced by trapped air, surface residues, wetting and the strand's physical behaviour. It is not a dependable way to classify an individual's hair into a universal product routine.

Notice the problems you are trying to solve

Instead of buying products based on a label, identify whether the issue is buildup, tangling, stiffness, irritation or a lack of slip. These experiences can have different causes. Record how hair feels after cleansing and conditioning, and whether a change in product quantity affects the result.

Choose simpler formulations first

A suitable cleanser and conditioner may be sufficient. If leave-ins sit heavily on the hair, start with smaller quantities or a lighter-feeling product. Rinse thoroughly and adjust cleansing when residue accumulates. Oils and heavy butters are optional, not automatically forbidden or necessary.

Do not equate curl pattern with porosity

Two people with tightly coiled hair may respond differently to the same conditioner. Curl pattern is about strand shape; porosity and manageability are separate considerations. Chemical treatments, colouring, heat exposure and existing damage can affect the fibre in ways hair typing alone cannot describe.

When the problem goes beyond products

Scalp pain, marked hair loss or worsening irritation requires medical evaluation. An online porosity label cannot diagnose a scalp condition. For routine dryness and tangling, test changes slowly and keep whichever approach is comfortable and manageable.

The takeaway

Treat porosity as one possible description, not a fixed identity. Your hair's response to cleansing, conditioning and styling matters more than a test result shared on social media.
